Potassium Chloride

300mg

The primary intracellular electrolyte. Required for the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase pump that drives all cellular membrane potential - nerve conduction, muscle contraction, cardiac rhythm. UK adults average ~70% of the adequate intake. Balanced with sodium from Himalayan salt.

Evidence Level Strong - extensive human and clinical data

Mechanism

Potassium (K⁺) is maintained at 140 mEq/L intracellularly vs ~4 mEq/L extracellularly - a 35:1 gradient maintained by the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase pump at the cost of ~30% of total cellular ATP production. This gradient drives the resting membrane potential of all excitable cells (neurons, cardiac myocytes, skeletal muscle fibres). Potassium is also an intracellular enzyme cofactor, required for pyruvate kinase and other glycolytic enzymes.

UK dietary surveys show median potassium intake of approximately 3,000mg/day - well below the EFSA Adequate Intake of 3,500mg/day. Low potassium intake reduces the kidney's ability to excrete sodium, which can affect blood pressure regulation. The 400mg in this formula contributes approximately 11% of the AI.

Key Benefits

  • Primary intracellular electrolyte - maintains membrane potential in all cells
  • Required for Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase pump (uses ~30% of cellular ATP)
  • UK adults ~70% of adequate intake on average
  • Low intake independently associated with elevated blood pressure
  • Balanced with sodium from Himalayan salt

When to take it

Any time of day with food. Potassium is the primary intracellular electrolyte - consistent daily intake maintains the Na⁺/K⁺ gradient across all cell membranes. Take with food to avoid mild GI sensitivity.
